Best Use: Higher toxicity, lower ODP alternative that was commonly used in low pressure centrifugal chillers found in large buildings. A replacement and a retrofit in installed equipment with CFC refrigerant. While HCFCs were banned for U.S. mass production and importation as of 12/31/2019, production and importation is still allowed on a limited basis for the “servicing tail” of refrigeration equipment and for existing (pre-2020) fire protection equipment on the same basis until 2030. R-123 is also allowed for continued use through reclamation.
